consolidation ratio
The V-index shows the average consolidation ratio across large enterprises by calculating the ratio of virtual machines to physical hosts for each individual enterprise.
Average perceived virtual server to physical server consolidation ratio(i.e. X:1):
| Avg | UK | FR | DE | US | |
| Q2 | 9.8 | 7.9 | 11.3 | 7.7 | 11.2 |
| Q3 | 9.1 | 7.2 | 9.6 | 9.5 | 9.7 |
Average actual virtual server to physical server consolidation ratio(i.e. X:1):
| Avg | UK | FR | DE | US | |
| Q2 | 6.3 | 7.3 | 5.8 | 6.4 | 6.0 | Q3 | 5.1 | 4.6 | 5.6 | 4.7 | 5.2 |
Note:1. Penetration rates based on organizations that currently virtualize servers;
2. Perceived consolidation ratio based on respondents’ own assessment.
Actual ratio based on calculation of number of virtual machines divided by number of physical hosts for each individual respondent. Hence perceived consolidation differs from actual;
3. In this report N+X fault tolerance wasn’t included, i.e. 100/10 = 10:1;
4. As before, the differences between the Q2 and Q3 results can be explained by the different sample in this case. The fact that the Q3 survey specified server virtualization may also have affected results. As a consequence, we cannot state for certain that these figures currently represent a market shift.
